Olympic Mountains - Deer Valley
August 2000

Kristin and I took her sister, Karrie, to the Hurricane Ridge area of Olympic National Park to show her how FUN backpacking can be. We tried to tell her that the more she carried, the greater the reward would be once we reached our destination. Since she is a teacher, she was too smart to fall for that advice. It was a cold weekend and we ended up getting the best campsite at Moose Lake. The deer in Deer Valley (hence the name) are not very shy, as they come right up to your tent. Bambi was even spotted in our camp one morning. I think it was a good first backpacking experience for Karrie. She seemed to be very intrigued by the deer. However that is the only place I know of where deer are almost considered pests because they lounge around your campsite waiting for someone to go to the bathroom and lick, lick, lick. I won't go into that part...
