Olympic Mountains - Dungeness River/Marmot Pass
Tubal Cain Mine Loop Trip
July 2000

I took Kristin on her first backpacking trip in the Olympics and decided to visit the Buckhorn Wilderness area which is located in the Northeast section of the peninsula. It is just as beautiful as the National Park, but doesn't require the numerous permits. It was a 18-mile loop hike starting at the Upper Dungeness Trail and ending at the Tubal Cain Mine trailhead. Since the ending and starting point are about 4-miles from each other I drove the car up to where we would finish and ran the 4 miles back to the Dungeness trailhead where Kristin was waiting. Never run in hiking boots! I could barely hike the 3- 4 miles that day because my legs hurt so much from running on the logging road.

We camped the first night at Heather Creek and the second night at Marmot Pass. We lucked out our last day, and had terrific weather. We woke up to sunny skies and a view out to Puget Sound and the Everett area. The wildflowers were also in bloom and Kristin said she counted 40 or so different kinds. It was a great trip!
